Getting rid of a rodent stuck in a dumpster

If you have a rodent stuck in your dumpster, you shouldn’t take it lightly. This is literally the worst. You don’t want to be taking the trash out one day and have a rodent startle you by jumping unexpectedly on you.

Why a dumpster?

Why would a rodent choose to enter your dumpster? That is because it is a consistent food source for them. Rodents will not feel safe venturing inside your property for food. They will still come through, but they will stop once they find a food source as reliable and safe as a dumpster.

With the expansion in human territory, rodents have found it easier to live with humans. And feed off of our food sources. But humans still aren’t used to the idea of living with rodents. If your place has rodents, then placing bait traps won’t even be effective because rodents will be inclined towards going to your dumpster for food as it is a lot safer.

How does it get stuck?

Sometimes during the process of scavenging, a rodent may get stuck inside the dumpster. And it is hard for it to find its way out. Why is this so? Because the dumpster has smooth walls, thus rodents are unable to stick their nails into it and climb out. If that happens, they will probably stay there. Either they get buried underneath the trash, or they jump at you while you throw the garbage away. They may also tip the can if they are bigger while they are struggling to get out and spill the garbage all over.

How to remove them from the dumpster

First of all, try poking the rodent with a stick. Chances are you’ll startle it, and that’ll push him to get out. Or use a water spray bottle on it. For the same reason. Remember to wear protective clothing while you do this. If you don’t, the rodent might jump on you and bite you even. Also, wear a mask. If it doesn’t get out that way, you can place the can on a slight angle. The rodent will scamper out because walking on an inclination is easier. Or, you can also place fabric or a piece of wood against the side of the can. The rodent will climb out.

If none of this works or if the rodent is a little bigger, you can use a snare pole. Make sure while you are taking the animal out on a snare pole, you are standing on a level higher than where you are going to place the animal. Because when you put the rodent on the ground, it might run towards you. And you don’t want that.

Rodent proof your dumpster

Once your rodent has been removed, you have got to make sure it doesn’t return. For that, you can lock your dumpster. This will secure your dumpster and prevent any rodents from getting in. You can also try sealing any holes in the dumpster that may be letting the rodents in.
